City walls

The Modra city fortification system was built in the years 1610-1646 according to the plan of the Italian builders and has the character of a Renaissance bastion fortification. The walls, reaching 4-5 meters high, are 2300 meters long, which is about 70% of their original dimension. The fortification of the city was built according to the line of the already existing urban development, therefore the walls have an irregular shape. Entrances to the city from three suburbs were protected by gates: Dolná, Pezinská and the Horná brána still standing today. The circular tower, also called the Red Tower, serves today as the Gallery of the National Artist Ignác Bizmayer, and the square Lower Tower is part of the Majolika Hotel.

Lock

An extensive castle probably used and completed in the Great Moravian period.

Its advantageous strategic location allowed the control of roads at a distance of 15-20 km. The castle has the shape of a 115 m long and 105 m wide horseshoe closed by a rampart, which is combined along its entire length with a moat. The castle consists of two courtyards, at the eastern end of the rampart there is a spring that provides water for most of the year. The last investigative survey was carried out here in 1999 by the Archaeological Museum of the SNM, which dated the youngest phase of the fortification to the 13th and early 14th centuries. The castle is accessible from the Harmónia resort with a blue tourist sign or from Modra with a blue and later yellow tourist sign, or from Zochová chata with a red and then a blue tourist sign.

Tourist lookout tower on Veľká homoli

The tourist lookout tower on Veľká homoli was built at the end of 2001 and is located about 2.5 hours' walk from the center of Modra.

It is 20 m high and offers a circular view of the panorama of the Lesser Carpathians, Považské Inovec, the Tríbeč Mountains, the Danube Plain and, with good visibility, the Austrian Alps. Veľká homoľa is accessible by following the red sign from the bus stop near Zochová chata, from Modra by following the blue sign and from Pezinok by following the red (or later green) tourist sign. The tourist lookout tower was dismantled due to its unsatisfactory technical condition, and in the future a new lookout tower will be built in its place.

Tis rocks

Yew rocks are located near Zochová cottage under Veľka homoľa.

They consist of three separate parts of the rock ridge and were declared a protected area in 1977. The Yew Rocks are a natural monument, an important example of the genesis of the Lesser Carpathians. The name of the rocks was derived from the yew tree that once grew here, but today it is a rarity. The rock formation is located on the blue tourist sign leading from Zochová chata through Zámčisko to Harmonia.

Štúr's bench

A memorable place where Ľudovít Štúr often went (politician, writer, journalist, leader of the Slovak revolution in 1848-1849) during his time in Modra in 1851-1855.

The original monument in the shape of a bench from 1956 was destroyed, so in 1992 it was replaced by a new, unfortunately, now also devastated monument. A blue-marked hiking trail leads to Štúrová benches from Modra towards Veľká Homoľa (approximately 30 minutes). Štúr's bench is a frequent walking place in Modranov.
