Town hall

With the elevation of Modra to a free royal city in 1607, Modra reached the highest level of city administration, which resulted in the obligation for its townspeople to establish a representative city hall building.

No further information is known about its construction, but it can be assumed that it was created by expanding or rebuilding the residential building, while the complex of the Renaissance town hall and other buildings around the courtyard was created. The most extensive reconstruction of the town hall was in the years 1830-1837 and in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century. In the basement of the cellar are the original wine cellars, which were handed over by the townspeople as a mandatory city tax.

Upper gate

The upper gate represents an important landmark of the historical core of Modra. It is the only surviving original city gate built in 1610-1646.

As part of the city fortifications, it protected and allowed entry into the city from the northern suburbs. The arched passage on the ground floor was protected by a moat, drawbridge and embrasures. On its front wall is mounted the relief coat of arms of Blue with a Latin inscription, an excerpt from the 127th Psalm: „If the Lord does not guard the city, its guardians watch in vain.“ Since 1988, the Upper Gate has been managed by the Ľudovít Štúr Museum.
